How we rank products
Every Garage Ten guide answers one question: of the ten products people in the UK are buying most right now, which is the best one to buy? Here is exactly how we get there.
1. Start with real best sellers
We take the current top 10 best sellers in the relevant Amazon.co.uk category. We leave out accessories and spare parts (for example mounts, cables or extension leads) and listings with too little owner feedback to judge, then use the next best seller instead. The date we last checked the rankings is shown on every page.
2. Research each product
We read the full Amazon listing and technical details, manufacturer information and, where it exists, independent coverage from other publications. We compare specifications like for like and are sceptical of headline figures that owner experience does not support.
3. Analyse owner reviews
We study verified UK customer reviews for recurring themes: what owners consistently praise, what goes wrong, and how often. We look at the overall spread of ratings, not just the average, because a high share of one-star reviews often signals reliability or quality-control problems. We summarise these themes in our own words; we never copy reviews.
4. Score and rank
Each product receives four scores out of 10, combined with fixed weights:
- Owner satisfaction (35%): the balance of positive and negative owner experiences.
- Features and specification (30%): what it can do compared with the other nine.
- Value for money (20%): capability relative to typical selling price.
- Build quality and reliability (15%): durability, failures and after-sales support reported by owners.
We add a small adjustment of up to ±0.2 points for track record, so a product with tens of thousands of ratings is trusted slightly more than one with a few hundred. The overall score decides the order from 1 to 10.
What we don't do
We do not physically test products, accept payment for placement or let affiliate commission affect rankings. When we say owners report something, that is exactly what it means.
Keeping guides current
Best-seller lists change. We recheck the rankings and update guides regularly, and every page shows when it was last reviewed.
